Bo Widerbergs genombrottsfilm är en på samma gång tidstypisk och tidlös berättelse om leda och klass i 1930-talets Sverige. Därtill är den en riktig klassiker som av filmkännare 1995 utsågs till den bästa svenska filmen genom tiderna.
Berättelsen utspelar sig under våren och sommaren 1936, tiden för spanska inbördeskrigets utbrott och Hitlers maktdemonstration i Olympiska spelen i Berlin. Vi befinner oss i den slitna arbetarstaden Malmö, närmare bestämt kvarteret Korpen; ett enormt lägenhetskomplex byggt kring en vidsträckt innergård. Huvudperson är Anders (Thommy Berggren), 19-årigt ensambarn till en hårt arbetande, obrottsligt lojal mamma (Emy Storm) och en alkoholiserad, desillusionerad pappa (Keve Hjelm). Anders arbetar i fabrik men drömmer om att bli författare. En dag får han inbjudan till Bonniers förlag i Stockholm, men resan blir inte den stora förändring han och familjen hoppats på. Tvärtom ter sig framtiden än mer hopplös och när det dessutom visar sig att flickvännen Elsie är gravid bestämmer sig Anders för att bryta upp.

The story takes place during the spring and summer of 1936, the time of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War and Hitler’s show of power at the Olympic Games in Berlin. We find ourselves in the worn-down working-class city of Malmö, specifically in the district known as “Korpen” (“The Raven”): a vast apartment complex built around a large inner courtyard. The main character is Anders (Thommy Berggren), a 19-year-old only child of a hard-working, endlessly loyal mother (Emy Storm) and an alcoholic, disillusioned father (Keve Hjelm). Anders works in a factory but dreams of becoming a writer. One day he receives an invitation from Bonniers publishing house in Stockholm, but the trip does not bring about the great change he and his family had hoped for. On the contrary, the future seems even more hopeless, and when he learns that his girlfriend Elsie is pregnant, Anders decides to leave it all behind.
