A curated night of film, culture, and conversation celebrating the life and legacy of Umm Kulthum, brought together through cinema and community. 

Beit Ebla presenterar El Sett, en stark och visuellt storslagen biografisk film om den legendariska egyptiska sångerskan och skådespelerskan Umm Kulthum.

Vi välkomnar er till Bio Skandia, Drottninggatan, Stockholm, för en helkväll där film, musik och gemenskap möts.

Filmen är regisserad av Marwan Hamed och skriven av Ahmed Mourad. Den följer Umm Kulthums liv från barndomen i byn Tamay al-Zahayra till hennes internationella genombrott och ikonstatus. Med Mona Zaki i huvudrollen skildras en kvinna som navigerar traditioner, motstånd och makt, och som genom sin röst kom att prägla generationer och en hel regions kulturella identitet.

Berättelsen rör sig mellan det personliga och det politiska, med nedslag i Egyptens och den arabiska världens samhällsförändringar under 1950- och 60-talen. Relationerna till poeter och kompositörer som Ahmed Rami, Mohamed El Qasabgi och Riad Al Sunbati spelar en central roll i både hennes konstnärliga utveckling och liv.

Dörrarna öppnar kl. 17:00 för förmingel och mini-iftar, en stund att samlas och samtala innan filmen börjar.

Filmen startar kl. 18:30.

Efter visningen följer en livepodd med Kalam Podcast och programledare Edgar Mannheimer.

Beit Ebla presents El Sett, a powerful and visually striking biographical film about the legendary Egyptian singer and actress Umm Kulthum.

We welcome you to Bio Skandia, Drottninggatan, Stockholm, for an evening of film, music, and community.

Directed by Marwan Hamed and written by Ahmed Mourad, the film follows Umm Kulthum’s life from her childhood in the village of Tamay al-Zahayra to her international breakthrough and iconic status. With Mona Zaki in the lead role, the story portrays a woman navigating tradition, resistance, and power, whose voice came to shape generations and the cultural identity of an entire region.

Moving between the personal and the political, the film captures the social and political transformations of Egypt and the Arab world during the 1950s and 1960s. Her relationships with poets and composers such as Ahmed Rami, Mohamed El Qasabgi, and Riad Al Sunbati play a central role in both her artistic development and personal life.

Doors open at 5:00 PM for a pre-screening mingle and mini-iftar, offering time to gather and connect before the film.

The screening begins at 6:30 PM.

After the film, there will be a live podcast recording with Kalam Podcast, hosted by Edgar Mannheimer.
